Kevala Meditation
The word meditation can be extremely daunting for some people. When I first heard the word ‘meditation’, I immediately pictured spiritual yogis, sitting incredibly still with utmost concentration. To my delight, I discovered this to be completely untrue!
Meditation is the practice of contemplation as a pathway to becoming more mindful, patient, forgiving and compassionate.
There are varying forms of meditation:
- Mantras (silently repeating a word or phrase),
- Moving meditation (Tai chi, Qigong, yoga)
- Counting the breath or breath only focus
- Guided (e.g chakra)
- Vipassana (observing body sensations)
Many find that meditation brings balance to their lives, reduces stress, allows them to handle every day challenges more positively and allows them to process their emotions better. Other benefits of meditation include increased energy levels, decreased feelings of depression and anxiety, an improvement in self-acceptance and a longer and happier life .You don’t need to be spiritual or religious to start meditating – you only need to be willing to give it a try!
You can begin with just a few minutes each day. Firstly, you’ll need to find a quiet or relaxing place to sit. Lighting candles, darkening the room or putting on some background music is a fantastic way to set the tone for your meditation session. Start by breathing slow an evenly, concentrating on each inhale and exhale. The goal is not to clear your mind – it’s simply to acknowledge those distractions and become more mindful of them.
Alternatively, you can come to a Kevala Meditation class, where you will be guided through the art of meditation by a professional teacher. The Yin Meditation beginner class features a 15-20 minute guided meditation at the end. This class is offered both at Helensvale (Tue 6:30pm) and Coomera (Tue & Thurs 10:30am). Each Kevala yoga class also offers a 10 minute meditation session at the end to promote relaxation and encourage full body & mind healing.
A Meditation only class will be coming soon at Helensvale on Thursday, from 7.30pm to 8.15pm ( bookings essential as limited numbers)
See you there!
